X-Rays use radiation to take a picture of a specific part of the body to determine a diagnosis. They are the most common type of diagnostic radiology and are used in a variety of capacities from a common chest X-ray to determine whether a patient might have pneumonia to an X-ray of a bone that might be fractured.

The ultrasound system is a diagnostic exam utilizing painless, high frequency sound waves to obtain pictures of the internal structures of the body. Unity Health Center's ultrasound system provides a high level of image quality and sensitivity to blood flow in the body and is considered one of the safest diagnostic tools available today. Ultrasounds meet a variety of diagnostic needs from evaluating the size and position of the fetus for expecting moms, to helping evaluate a patient's risk of stroke by determining the amount and type of plaque build-up in arteries. It is also used to scan the liver, kidney, uterus and ovaries.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a technique that allows doctors to see inside the body in remarkable detail. MRI provides an enhanced contrast of body tissue and can produce images of body organs in motion. It uses a powerful magnet, radio waves and a sophisticated computer system that works together to provide the physician with information on certain types of body tissue, such as internal organs, joints, brain and spine.

CT Scan (Computed Tomography) is an x-ray technique in which cross-sectional pictures or "tomographic slices" of the body are made by x-ray. Unity Health Center has recently installed a CT spiral scanner at both the North and South campuses and is pleased to offer this state-of-the-art technology to the community. Spiral CT scanners are one of the latest innovations, because they use continuous scanning to generate these cross-sectional slices to make a set of 3-dimensional images that clearly shows the shape and exact location of organs, soft tissues and bones in any "slice" of the body. CT scans help physicians distinguish between a simple cyst and a solid tumor.

Mammography is a low-dose x-ray technique that is used to create an image of the breasts on an x-ray film. The mammography exam enables the radiologist to view the thickness of the breast tissue on the x-ray film and reveals any masses or tumors in the breast.
